Monumental mermaids of Martinique

Photo essay by Lou Luddington:
Manman Dlo is a mermaid sculpture submerged in the bay of Saint Pierre in the Caribbean island of Martinique. Weighing more than 20 tons, it was installed by local artist Laurent Valère in 2004, as homage to the sea and an invitation to protect it. The head of the sculpture is upturned to the surface. A little further away you can see the tail fin, as if the body of the creature is buried in the sand. © Lou Luddington
